Watching the new HxH episodes reminded me that a long time ago I made an Alluka avatar on a forum, for Christmas.

Anime Recommendation: Dennou Coil

vetroci:

There are two ways to tell a science-fiction story. The first and most popular method involves sending the viewer into awe with colorful futurescapes and jazzy displays of powerful technology. The second and less common technique uses subtlety and immerses us into the world by asking us to learn how the technology works.

Remember the feeling when you were a kid getting into shenanigans with the other kids? (I’m truly sorry if you didn’t). Well imagine giving every kid glasses that lets them interact with an alternate internet world rendered ontop of the real one. Sounds cool, right? That’s Dennou Coil for you. What’s brilliant about this anime is how it explains none of that but opts to teach you the various mechanics of its world through action.

The sci-fi elements are there to engage you and immerse you but the story is what carries you through. Dennou Coil is a coming-of-age tale of two girls and their mysterious connection to the cyberworld. Each faces a number of childhood trials as they try to make sense of both worlds around them. The internal strife and development arc of each of these characters are realistic for a child yet mature enough for older viewers to enjoy. It’s all about revelations that impart truth after simple truth about life, building up to a fast-paced, awe-inspiring climax.

Every aspect of Dennou Coil feels carefully constructed to push the story and characters to their fullest potential. The use of simplistic effects, CGI coupled with the detailed smooth animation, and melancholic color scheme complements the premise perfectly. The end result is a smart, beautiful scifi anime that will play with your mind and heart til the final end credits.

Urasawa Artbook Monster Scans Part I - Two Part Pages

My newly purchased scanner is rather small, so given the size of the book I could only scan one page at a time — here are the drawings which took up two pages.

I’m back.

And I have so many anime episodes to catch up to… (Yes, that’s the first thing I think about.)
